Concurrent with GP40 production, EMD offered a lower horsepower, non-turbocharged locomotive based on the same 645-series prime mover. The four-axle GP38 was rated at 2,000 hp and had the advantage of costing less than the GP40. A total of 727 units were produced between 1966 and 1971 when the model was superseded. The wheel base of the GP38 was identical to that of the GP40. Both units shared the same EMD road-switcher style body that was introduced with the GP35 in 1963. A desire for standardization caused the GP38 to share the same wheelbase, frame and many external components as the GP40. The GP38 was purchased by large and small roads alike. It was routinely found in local and road freight service throughout the US. Many GP38s and 40s are still in service today.

Options on the Atlas GP38 and GP40 models include a long hood with or without dynamic brakes and an underframe with 2,600 or 3,600 gallon fuel tanks.

White Rose Hobbies HO Scale (1:87) AEI Tag Reader / Scanner update!

January 13, 2016

We are currently working on our 2nd release of our HO Scale AEI Scanner / Tag Reader. Our 1st release is sold out! We have gotten our measurements even closer to the prototype. We are cutting new tooling in the coming weeks.

Click Here to be notified when this release is ready to ship!

You can also check for updates on this project on our website.

AEI tags began to be implemented in the early 1990’s to replace the failed ACI tags of the 1970’s. The tags use a radio frequency and are scanned at various points along the railroad, typically when a train enters or leaves a classification yard. The tags are programmed with the cars reporting mark (ie SHPX 458099) as well as which side of the car they are on. This allows the scanner to record the orientation of the car (ie A end or B end passed through first).

We have been featured in the January 2016 issue of Model Railroad news for this product!

White Rose Hobbies HO Scale (1:87) AEI Tag Scanner / Reader and AEI tags for freight cars and locomotives.

October 11, 2015

White Rose Hobbies HO Scale (1:87) AEI Tag Reader / Scanner and AEI tags for freight cars and locomotives.

We are producing a HO Scale (1:87) version of the pole mounted AEI tag reader / scanner. This will enabled the modeler to closely replicate how railroads keep track of all equipment both locomotives as well as rolling stock. The AEI Tag Reader / Scanners will be sold in pairs.

To accompany our AEI Tag Reader we will also be producing scale AEI tags that can be applied to any piece of HO Scale equipment. These things are tiny but will be exactly 1:87 scale from the real thing. The tags will be sold in quantities of 20 or more.

New paint schemes on the HO Scale Atlas 50′ Postwar Boxcar

April 30, 2015

Atlas will be releasing six new paint schemes on their 50′ Postwar Boxcar as part of their Master Series of model trains. In addition to the new paint schemes the cars will also have one of three different side sill styles – straight, tabbed and fishbelly and 8′ & 9′ Superior or Youngstown doors.

Prototype:

At the end of World War II, railroads ordered large numbers of 50′ AAR boxcars with a standard design that was first widely used in the late 1940s. This design was based on the original 1937 AAR design but was modified in the post-war era to include: improved dreadnaught end and diagonal panel roofs with standard or overhanging design. These 50′ boxcars were a common sight on American railroads well into the 1970s and 1980s.

Each of the cars will be available in 2 numbers per roadname. List $35.95 White Rose Hobbies Price $24.99

To see them and more 50′ Boxcar check out the White Rose Hobbies Website HO Scale 50′ Boxcar Page. They are expected late 2015.  You may contact us to reserve this or any upcoming model.
